My wife works for a certain Government Department and received notice last week that the upcoming Census in August could be filled out on-line and the suggestion was made that all Government employees should avail themselves of this.

Being Mac & Linux users, with no Windows machines or installations in the house (and no desire or intention of creating any), I emailed the ABS, from the form on their website, and asked them the following relatively simple questions;

My wife, who works for a Government department, has just received notice of the availavility of eCensus.
Can you guarantee that the census forms will work regardless of operating system (i.e. on Mac OSX and Linux), and regardless of browser (Safari, IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera at least) ?
And will there be any use of FLASH on the site, or other technologies that will impair completion of the form using a portable device such as an iPhone or iPad ?

Being web-based having this compatability would not exactly be rocket science.

I would have thought that the above was fairly simple. After all, if they have written their web pages to recognised and ratified HTML standards, this should be no great problem. It should – it MUST – be compatible with any device on the market that uses a standard browser.

Here’s their incomplete reply so far;

This confuses me somewhat. They state, in the first line, that eCensus is not designed to be accessed by portable hand-held devices, and then in the last sentence state that it will work on iPads and iPhones ?? They have contradicted themselves almost immediately.

They also state that it has been tested with a PC – no mention of Macintosh or Linux, as in my original question, nor of other browsers ? Are we to take this, on the face of it, to mean that unless you are running Windows in some incarnation and, by inference, the pathetically inept Internet Explorer, you will be unable to successfully complete the eCensus ? I am still waiting to hear back from them on this.

In this day and age, where we are moving towards online EVERYTHING, there is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for creating an online service that is incompatable with a large and growing portion of the population’s hardware.

As a further example, examine this (admittedly creative) explanation of why the census is so important. It uses Adobe’s “Flash” technology as well – not supported universally. Yes, there is an “accessable” version, which is poorly-written text, but you loose all of the functionality and the audio track that explains much of how the Census works.

Writing this whole thing – the eCensus AND the explanation – could have been written in HTML5 and CSS3, ratified and tested STANDARDS, with fairly minimal effort, and avoided disadvantaging the non-Windows using population of this country.

The whole idea of the eCensus is partly to save the ABS money and time in producing the census statistics – it would be great to actually be able to see the data live as it is entered, or at least within 6 months of the census, rather that years and years as is the current situation.

If the ABS doesn’t guarantee this situation will be addressed site-wide as a matter of priority, I certainly encourage people to refuse to use the eCensus site and fill in the PAPER census – make them work for their money.

Comments are most welcome.

I was sent this by a friend today and had to post it here – not because I’m racist, anti-Muslim (or any other nationality or religion), but because I’m AUSTRALIAN. Born here 52 years ago, from a combination of Welsh and Kiwi grandparents (both my parents were born here), and I LOVE THIS COUNTRY, but it is slowly being destroyed by “political correctness” gone absolutely mad.

Politicians who don’t have the guts to mandate that the business and educational functions of this country should be done IN ENGLISH. Do you know you can take a driving test (in NSW at least) in one of 2 dozen languages and NOT HAVE TO SPEAK ENGLISH at all ? What’s next, road signs in other languages because the immigrants are either too LAZY to learn English, or believe it’s their God-given RIGHT to tell us how to run our country ?

Walk through Parramatta, in the main shopping area, at any time of the day or night and see all the shops with non-English signs on them – I have no problem with them trying to attract business in their own language, but they MUST HAVE ENGLISH AS WELL. How would it be if you went to live in, as an example, Vietnam and demanded that the shop signs were in English ? You’d soon be told to learn Vietnamese or get out of the country – and RIGHTLY SO TOO !!

I have many many good friends of dozens of nationalities, many of whom have children who go to school with my two – Asian, Arabic, Indian, Vietnamese – even Yanks (), and they are some of the nicest and most honest, hard working people you could ever meet, and even THEY are offended by what this country is doing.

If your opinion of me changes because of this post, then I feel very sorry for you having such a narrow point of view of the world. If you don’t want to speak to me or read my blog or follow me on Twitter, I won’t be offended – I just won’t loose any sleep over it. You are as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine, and although we may disagree I’m at least willing to discuss and debate the changes that MUST be made if the Australian ideal is to survive.

This is not a funny ….. its what all of us are thinking but not saying.

Nik Ziogopoulos states what is fact and what we all believe.

Nik would be in his 70′s at least.

——————————————-

A GREAT PERSPECTIVE FROM A ‘NEW’ AUSTRALIAN

Nik Ziogopoulos

I emigrated to Australia over 60 years ago – On the ship there were Poms, Italians (Spags), Germans (Huns), Yugoslavs (Yuges), Poles, Ducchys, Ukes (Ukrainians) and Greeks. (Note – All European people!!) all looking forward to starting a new life in Australia. I arrived with 30 quid in my pocket and that’s all I had to my name, Did I put my hand out?? Of course not – I got a job and paid my way just like everyone else who came to this country back then.

Now, it’s my taxes that subsidize these people who think they have Gods given right (read Allah) to come here and criticise those of us who have worked for the country we now call home.

If I didn’t like what I saw when I got here I would have gone home – they have the same option.

If they don’t want to become an Australian, they can GO BACK TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM – WE DON’T NEED THEM HERE!!!

When will this stop?

  • They want 2 of their own public holidays, because Christians have Christmas, Easter & Good Friday
  • They force our children to eat Halal Meat Pies and Sausage Rolls from the school canteens, so the Muslim kids can feel more Aussie. We were not consulted about this change – they went ahead and just did it.
  • Our foods are slowly all becoming Halal foods, our cheeses, chocolates & even good old sanitarium foods
  • Our Government is ALLOWING this to happen. It has to stop now, while we still have some power to be able to stop it.

Regarding Our National Anthem, I am sorry, but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Arabic – enough is enough. Nowhere or at no other time in our nation’s history, did they sing it in Italian, Japanese, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Greek, or any other language because of immigration.

It was written in English, and should be sung word for word the way it was written.

The news broadcasts even gave the translation — not even close.

I am not sorry if this offends anyone, this is MY COUNTRY – IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP

I am not against immigration – just come through like everyone else. Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past – and LONG LIVE Australia !

    Think about this:

If you don’t want to forward this for fear of offending someone – YOU’RE PART OF THE PROBLEM !!!!

Will we still be the Country of Choice and still be Australia if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries who have come to live in Australia because it is their Country of Choice??

    Think about it!

    IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT.

It is Time for Australia to Speak up!

(in this Australia where ‘freedom of speech’ is a fundamental right of every Australian)

THIS IS FROM A BLOODY GREEK BASTARD WHO MIGRATED TO AUSTRALIA IN THE LATE 1940s

This is a copy of a letter sent to employees of a small, but moderately successful, Sydney company earlier this year. This is indicative of  the damage the Australian Government is doing to small and medium businesses in Australia. Having run my own small business at one stage, I can see where the guy is coming from.

This is not only the situation in Australia, of course, but also in the US, UK and many other supposedly “developed” countries.
